September 18, 2006, 7:46 am : Waiting For a Door

I’m at home right now, instead of at the office, because I’m waiting on a member of our church to come and install a new backdoor at the parsonage. He was suppose to be here at 8:00 am, but it is now 8:42 am. We need a new backdoor because our current door is rusting out, and unless we want wild animals living in our house, we should probably get a new door before there’s a gaping hole in ours. In other news, Shay stayed home from school today. He said he wasn’t feeling good, but I think he’s just faking it. He was coughing a lot, but right after I told him he could stay he suddenly stopped coughing. I just think it was a magic, “Monday Morning” sickness that can only be cured by sleeping late. I’m thinking of taking him to the doctor, just make him go through something in order to stay home, but I probably won’t.

September 11th Memorial
Today marks the five year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. Today the country will be filled with memorial services, news specials remembering the day, made-for-TV movies, and politicians using the anniversary to justify wars, policy, and attacks on other politicians. There will be a lot of talk and noise today, but my remeberance will come in the form of silence and prayer. I pray for all those who were effected by September 11th, 2001, no matter how great or small. I pray for the families of those who lost loved ones that day. I pray for the heros that day, they came in many forms from fire fighters to priests. I pray our country may find peace. And I pray that our Father would bless our enemies, and teach us to love them as he loves us.

So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

who takes hold of your right hand

Bert The Turtle So we may have a small problem with our two pets. I’ve already mentioned our new puppy Jakers in a previous post, but I don’t think I’ve mentioned our pet turtle, Rocket. We’ve had Rocket a little longer than Jakers. He’s a box turtle we found and made an outdoor pen for. He’s lived happily with us for several months sleeping in grass and eating various fruits. I’m assuming that Jakers had not yet discovered Rocket until today, because it was today that Jakers choose to start carrying Rocket around in his mouth. It sounds quite bad, but it really isn’t. Luckily Rocket is a box turtle and at a moments notice he can entirely close himself inside of his shell. So, as Jakers carries Rocket around the yard, Rocket is safely in his shell. Although he is safe, I doubt being carried around in a dogs mouth is still very good for a turtle’s health. After removing Rocket from Jakers 3 times, and sternly warning Jakers not to do it again, we finally had to put Jakers on his chain until we can figure out what to do with the two different pets. Maybe counseling will work? I guess I’m just thankful Sandy hasn’t started carrying Jakers around in her mouth…. now that could be a real problem.

Cutest Girl In The World

We had Anna’s pictures taken this past Friday, and if I do say so myself, she is the cutest girl in the world. We’ve had her pictures made the past two times at Portrait Innovations, and they do a fantastic job. They really try to make children feel at home, while they’re their, and don’t over power them with 30 stuffed animals and loud, bird-like noises to try and make them smile. Our photographer did an awesome job of working with Anna, and trying to get her warmed-up. The only thing that I wish they would do more often is let the parents try and make the kid smile. Most of the time they never ask us to try and make Anna smile; this kind of stinks, because I know that a majority of the time, we could get her to smile. Oh well though, her pictures still turned out extremely cute. I put one of my favorites up above, and I’m going to try and install a photo gallery plugin to display the rest of her pictures on here. Hopefully I can do that later today.

A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore Bill Lizor turned me on, (is it wrong for a pastor to use the words “turned me on” while referring to another man?), to the wonderful literature of Christopher Moore. I just finished my second Christopher Moore book, A Dirty Job, and I loved it. Previously I had read, and and posted about, Lamb: The Gospel According To Biff Christ’s Childhood Pal. I love Moore’s writing, and I can’t thank Bill enough for mentioning it to me. I’m looking forward to reading two more of his books. The Stupidest Angel , a Christmas story about the angel from Lamb, and once it’s released in January 2007 his newest book about Vampires in love: You Suck, A Love Story. I like Moore’s writing so much, I think I could re-read his books again and again, something which I don’t typically do. If you too want to be turned on to Chris Moore, (I feel dirty just typing it), go to his website, http://www.chrismoore.com, and look at his long list of already published novels. You can rest assured that I will be slowly making my way down that list as time and money allows. Oh, and if you really want to by me a gift… Just ask me which books I havn’t read yet, and then you can get one of those for me.

Crikey I couldn’t believe it when I read this article on Yahoo. Steve Irwin is dead! Apparently while he was filling a new series called The World’s Deadliest… (pretty ironic huh?), a stingray stabbed him in the heart. I always thought Steve was funny… crazy, but funny. Now I feel bad for all the times I said that he was going to get himself killed doing stupid stuff. What will the world be like without a Crocodile Hunter? Who will track down and kiss the world’s most poisonous snakes? Who will feed crocodiles while holding their newborn son? Those will be some mighty big crocodile skin boots to fill. But seriously, my prayers are with his family… He’s got smal children, and I know his wife will be devastated.

Recently I was asked by an Austrian Mission Group to create a webpage for an upcoming event of theirs. I decided to do the job for free since it was a church, and started work on the site. The event is to be a, “Summer’s Arts-based missionary outreach, which is also known as 7-7-7, because it begins on the 7th of July 2007″. It sounds like it’s going to be a pretty cool event, and it looks to have good support and be well organized. So I was eager to begin work on a site for something that seems very cool.

Above is the logo that I created for them. and here is the link to the template that I’ve created for them so far. I like the design, and I hope they do too. Anyway, I just thought that I would share that with everyone.

Jakers So like I said before we just got a new dog. One evening Zach was walking back from the “store”, (the store is actually a gas station that carries a few household things and some food. For some reason everyone thinks that because it carries these things it is automatically a grocery store, and not simply a gas station. Thus Zach was walking back from the store, and not the gas station.), and a black dog decides to follow him home. There are plenty of stary dogs in the area, and most will follow you to your door then go away when they realize that you’re not going to feed them. We assumed the same would be true for this dog, we were wrong. For two days this dog slept on our back deck and refused to leave. I tried to make him leave, I yelled at him, I refused to feed him, and in the end… the dog was still here.

I told Zach on Saturday morning to go check the houses in the area to see if it was anyone’s dog. Amazingly enough, Zach found the owners, and told them he would bring their dog back to them. When Zach returned with the dog to the owner’s house they told Zach that he could keep the dog if he wanted, because they didn’t really want it. Zach said he would have to check, left the dog with its owners and headed back to our house. Before Zach got back to the house, the dog had caught back up with him; apparently the owners could even be bothered with locking their dog back up in the back yard. So, we kept the dog and named him Jakers. He still pretty much a puppy, but he is really good. He scared of just about everything: tents, rocks, running water, the lawn mower, steps, the van, etc.

So, now that we had this new dog we decided we would take him camping with us. Our first day camping we decide to go swimming in the river, and we take Jakers down there with us. He’s a little freaked out by the water, but follows us in. You can tell he’s scared being in there, but he endures it because we are in there. Then we move to a little faster current, and Zach lets go of his leash. Small dog, fast current, Jakers begins to get swept away. He managed to pull himself up on a rock sticking out of the water, and I have to literally carry him out of the water to safety. He was a little scared of the water before… now he’s very scared.

Switch to day two of camping, and we’re walking on the trail closest to the campground. As I mentioned in a previous post there were some sink holes and rock crevises along this trail. They were pretty deep in some spots, but for your average person they were safe to walk over and look down. All you had to do was be semi-observant and there was no way you would fall down one; unless you are a dog. As we’re walking looking down the crevises, Shay lets go of Jaker’s leash. Jakers runs toward Zach and I and then suddenly disappears into the ground. All that’s left visible is a tail. I quickly grab the tail before it too disappears down the crevise and yank Jakers back to the top by his tail. Almost killing the dog twice in two days probably doesn’t qualify us for any sort of owners award, but at least he is still alive. It’s probably a good idea not to take him camping anymore, but I figure whatever doesn’t kill him, makes him stronger… oddly though, he doesn’t seem any stronger yet from his last two experiences.

Shay and Zach Falling So, technically this post is a little late, but I still wanted to write about it. Last Monday Shay, Zach, and I went camping at Henry Horton State Park. We stayed three days and two nights and came back pretty dirty. We had a pretty good time, even though it rained on us every day we were there. The worst of the storms came through Monday night, there was some pretty intense thunder and lightening as we sat in our little metal pole tent. Obviously we survived without getting struck by lightening and made it back home. You might not be able to tell in the above picture, but Shay and Zach are actually standing over a rather deep sink hole crevice. We found a bunch of deep crevises as we walked along one of the park trails. It was also at these crevises that we almost killed our new dog, Jakers. But… more on that next post. So aside from the storms, almost killing our dog, and Shay breaking the tent, (Oh yeah… Shay almost broke the tent), it was a pretty good, fun, relaxing trip.
